bcb7093a32187f475fad43e0e523aeedb61f6268It’s back!  The amazing Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in Blue Ridge, GA will be opening on March 18, 2016. You will love the nostalgic history this railway holds.  This 100 year old railway played such a significant role in the development of North Georgia in the 1800’s and early 1900’s hauling freight, timber, and more.  Now you can experience history while taking a railway excursion of 26 miles round trip (4 hours) from Blue Ridge to McCaysville & Copperhill, TN which winds along the Toccoa River. There’s a 2 hour layover in McCaysville to enjoy lunch, shopping or a nice stroll across the old bridge in town to see Toccoa River. Purchase your tickets online HERE or call 877-413-TRAIN press Option 1 to reserve your tickets.

The main line started in Murphy NC and reached Blue Ridge in 1886. The builders intended to continue until they reached Knoxville, Tn but in 1887 the plans were changed as Knoxville and Blue Ridge were ultimately connected via a slightly different but much more exciting route via the Hiawassee River Gorge.

Another interesting fact is that the railroad industry played a significant role in the development of the North Georgia area between the 1800’s and the early 1900’s. They made it possible to log the last remaining virgin timber in the area, as well as determining the routes of local roads.  They also helped save an ailing mining industry and contributed to the growth of small towns as resort communities.

In 1990, this railway line was put up for sale and a group of local investors stepped in to preserve rail service into North Georgia. As a result, passenger trains are operating once again into the beautiful North Georgia Mountains.  Since excursion service began operating in 1998, the train has been staffed with dedicated volunteer Car Hosts from all over the surrounding area. Each host is required to attend training classes before serving. Some of our hosts spend the weekend in the mountains and others sign up on a per-trip basis.

Cars are assigned however seats are not…seats are sold first come, first serve.  Also learn more about their Easter Eggspress on March 26, 2016.  This is an amazing adventure held in Farmer Brown’s field where kids can hunt Easter Eggs and greet the Easter Bunny! Get your Tickets HERE!
