This scenic and beautiful part of North Georgia is bordered by Tennessee and North Carolina. The area is a magical place in the Blue Ridge Mountains held in high esteem by the Cherokee Indians. All around Gilmer County there are many hiking trails and this includes the famous Appalachian Trail near Cherry Log which you can continue all the way up to Maine. In the neighboring town of the Ellijays there is a walking trail located in the Coosawattee river park and winds around the river. There are also picnic facilities along with others like a pool and tennis court.
This beautiful and scenic area of Gilmer County plays host to lot of outdoor activities including hiking, biking, fishing, paddle sports, enjoying the fresh clear mountain air along with scenic waterfalls. If you love the water check out nearby Carters Lake which has over fifty miles of shoreline. There is a campground which has primitive camping sites and a new hiking trail.
Located in Cherry Log is the “Rich Mountain Wildlife Management Area” which is located in the national forest of Chattahoochee. Over twenty thousand acres the managed area offers all kinds of outdoor adventures including hiking, camping, mountain biking and the area is very popular with hunters. The area is really a primitive backcountry experience with very unique views and botanicals.
