So it’s Summer time & the kids are itching for something to do besides go to the pool.  They’re now in a the dreaded “Summer Lull” & nothing seems to interest them. Here’s a great idea that will give them a cool history lesson, as well as make lasting memories for your family here in the scenic mountains of North Georgia.  There are amazing scenic wonders on every hand here in North Georgia from the highest mountain elevation in Georgia at Brasstown Bald to fishing in the Trout Fishing Capital of Georgia in Blue Ridge.  These are all amazing but  The Sautee Nacoochee Indian Mound at Hardman Farm located just south of Helen, GA is a unique destination fun for all ages.  The gazebo-topped mound and cow pasture is a favorite landmark in North Georgia with exceptional ties to Native American history.

On the farm you’ll have a guided house tour include where you’ll explore the 1870’s mansion/farm house & experience what it was like in the old days sitting in a parlor.  This historic home has original lighting and interesting telephone and climate control system.  Ever heard of Anna Ruby Falls?  You’ll see the bedroom belonging to Anna Ruby Nichols, the namesake of nearby Anna Ruby Falls. There’s also the old barn as a main focal point of Nacoochee Dairy that operated from 1910 until the mid-1920s.  You will learn how milk was processed and transported, plus you will see a spring house and former horse barn. The tree-lined road leading from the visitor center to the house is a remaining portion of the historic Unicoi Turnpike. This 200-mile road went from Toccoa to western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. It began as a buffalo trail, then a Native American trading route.

This detailed home was built in 1870 by Captain James Nichols, the house is a grand example of Italianate architecture and was originally known as “West End” because it was at the west end of the Nacoochee Valley. So much more to learn in this uniquely incredible historic site.
