It’s such a joy to work in the beautiful NEGA mountains doing what we love & it’s a joy to have the opportunity to sponsor programs that help our youth learn how to preserve these mountains & appreciate their heritage. The Georgia Mountain Research & Education Center (GMREC) is such an entity that contributes to our community is so many ways. Led by Superintendent, Ray Covington, through University of Georgia, this team manages the 415 acres of orchards, test plots, pasture land, spcimen & preservation gardens, historic sites & forests – providing education programs for adults & children alike.
Above are photos from yesterday’s Environmental Field Day where many presenters helped the children understand these different fields & how to actively be involved with conservation in their community. The presenters were as follow: The Georgia Forestry Commission, Entomologist Bob McPherson, the Hiawassee River Watershed Coalition, North GA Recylcing with CC member Leslie George, Chattahoochee Forest National Fish Hatchery manager Kelly Taylor, Habersham County Watershed Coordinator Duncan Hughes, and our very own Research Technician Clare Johnson teaching about predator/prey relationships.
Thanks again to Ray Covington & his team for providing such a valuable program for our youth! Keep it up!
