I love running across new places and fun family ideas of things to do in the mountains and want to share them with those of you who are visiting in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains or perhaps live here and didn’t even know some of these great places existed! Recently, I discovered a place where an amazing woman, Susan Littlejohn, has dedicated her life to rescuing animals in need. You have to visit Build An Ark Animal Rescue located in Ellijay, Georgia in order to appreciate this place.
Build an Ark Animal Rescue Foundation serves as a foster home to baby sheep, goats, rams, alpaca, ponies, horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, baby chicks as well as dogs and cats (and that’s just scratching the surface). Here these animals are allowed to roam and have a peaceful existence on the Coosawattee River near Carter’s Lake. Children and adults alike have a smile on their face and enjoy seeing God’s creatures in such a fabulous environment!
Not only will you enjoy the animals and scenery but the story of how this place has survived and triumphed after being completely destroyed in 2011 by a tornado. In the midst of all the bad things we hear about in our world, you will enjoy this place and inspiring story of how Susan uses these animals as therapeutic companions for disabled children and senior citizens. In addition, juvenile offenders are sent to her by court systems in three counties so she can teach them skills in caring for animals as a way to perform community service and build personal character.
If you are in Ellijay, you should take some time to go to this amazing place. While you are here, call us at The Mountain Life Team to show you some cabins and homes available to you on the Coosawatee River as well as all of Ellijay.
