SUP?-“Stand Up Paddling”-October Lessons at Surf Blue Ridge

The Mountain Life Team Blogger October 8, 2012

Have you ever been driving around and see the SUP sticker on a car?  The other day a friend of mine asked, “what in the world does that mean?”  Luckily, after learning about Surf Blue Ridge, located in downtown Blue Ridge, I was able to tell her.  SUP stands for “stand up paddle”, which is rapidly becoming a very popular sport.  As you are standing on the board while paddling, you are developing your balance, endurance, core strengthening as well as feeling a oneness with the beautiful nature that surrounds you, especially here in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains!

The roots of this sport began in Hawaii and has expanded globally very quickly!  People have participated in this sport on the ocean, rivers and lakes.  Owner of Surf Blue Ridge, Chris Tilghman, was the first to open a SUP store in the Blue Ridge area.  He brings over 25 years of experience and knowledge of this sport to the area.  Some of his experience includes living for 5 years on Kaunis north shore.

Surf Blue Ridge offers multiple lessons and tours to help the beginner get started!  Their knowledge will help you pick out the exact equipment that is suitable for you including the board, paddle and suit.  Their lessons mainly are given on Lake Blue Ridge and the Toccoa River.  They even provide a healthy picnic during your lesson.

Surf Blue Ridge says October is one of the greatest months to participate in this sport.  What a great time to be on the water seeing all of the beautiful leaves that are changing colors.  There is still time for a water activity!!  Also, you won’t freeze because of the suits you can rent there!  Give Surf Blue Ridge a call and check out this great sport that will not only be fun, but a great workout as well!  You may enjoy it so much that you decide to participate in one of their racing events!   Let me know how much fun you have!
