An absolutely beautiful setting located off Highway 76 in Hiawassee, known as the Towns County Beach and Playground, has become a favorite for my family to visit each year. In fact, it is a tradition that each year, the day before school starts, we go there to put an ending to our children’s summer vacation.
The beauty of Lake Chatuge, a 7,500 acre lake, inspired people to name the North Georgia valley that contains Lake Chatuge, “The Enchanted Valley.” Enchanted is a very suitable name for this God inspired masterpiece that contains 133 miles of shoreline and stretches across Georgia and North Carolina. In a small section of this lake, directly across the street from the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds, is the beach.
The beach area consists of a roped off area for all to swim and enjoy. The white sand is clean and there is a lot of area to relax and sun or watch the kids play. Directly behind the beach area, is shade with some picnic tables and swings.
A great feature to this FREE beach is the concession stand and bath house area. Each time we have gone, it has been clean and available. Directly behind the bath house is a fabulous fenced in play structure for the kids. You will also see pavilions to host family reunions, parties or other activities. There is ample amounts of shade, picnic tables and seating which makes coming to this beach most enjoyable.
The view of the mountains alone that surround this lake are reason enough to visit. While we were there with my family yesterday, I smiled as I watched my kids enjoy the water, play in the sand and make friends. My son had a fabulous time trying to catch fish with the little boys he met.
Towns County Beach and Playground is one of my favorite mountain vacation memories.
